2
Q
What are disadvantages of covert observations?
A
- Gaining access to the group in the first place may be a potential problem

3
Q
What are advantages of overt observations?
A
- It avoids ethical problems of obtaining information by deceit and when studying deviant groups, that of being expected to join their activity

- Observer can simply take notes
- Allows researcher to use interview methods to check insights derived from observations

Q
What are disadvantages of overt observation?
A
- A group may refuse the researcher permission to observe them, or may prevent them from seeing everything
- It risks creating the Hawthorne Effect, where those who know they are being observed begin to behave differently as a result - undermining validity
