What does Connolly say about teacher racism?
African, Caribbean and Asian are often victims of racism which means there’s a negative impact on education performance.
What does Modood say about teacher racism?
Racism can’t be a complete explanation and some ethnic minority groups do perform well in the education system
What does Tryona and Williams argue?
In order to explain ethnic differences in achievement they need to go beyond the individual teacher racism and need to look at how schools discriminate routinely and unconsciously.
What is individual racism?
The results from prejudice views of an individual
What is institutional racism?
Discrimination that is built into the ways that institutions are run and operate.
What is the critical race theory?
Sees racism as an ingrained feature of society - not always intentional actions (institutional racism)
What does Gilborn argue?
He says that teachers interpret policy in a way that disadvantages black pupils:
- Restricted curriculum
- Setting in low level groups
- Placement on vocational courses
What does Ranson argue?
He says that governing bodies are unrepresentative of ethnic minorities, they are disproportionately white and middle class.
What do critical race theorists argue?
They argue that the education system is institutionally racist in a number of ways:
- The curriculum
- Marketisation and Segregation
- Assessment
- Access to opportunities
- The “New IQism”
What is ethnocentric?
Emphasising white middle class culture at the expense of other cultures.
Why do some sociologists argue that the school curriculum is ethnocentric?
It gives priority to white culture and the English language
