P1 Education - Feminists Flashcards
What do feminists believe the role of education is?
Feminists believe that education transmits particular norms and values onto pupils (normally patriarchal values)
What do Heaton and Lawson believe about role of education?
That the hidden curriculum taught patriarchal values in schools. They both noted traditional family structures in textbooks among many other gendered roles in PE, specific subjects aimed towards genders and the division of labour in schools.
What were the views of Liberal feminists on education?
They point out the remaining issues of patriarchy while also celebrating the progress made so far in improving girls achievement. They believe that the “future is female” and that girls are outperforming boys in education.
What are the views of Radical feminists on education?
Patriarchy still works through school to reinforce traditional gender norms and to disadvantage girls (gendered subject choice, boys underachievement is a “moral panic”, sexist bullying)
What are the views of black and difference feminists on education?
Not all girls have the same experience of education. All feminists agree that the education system acts as an agent of secondary socialisation teaching the norms, values and gender scripts that are seen as normal. Girls and boys learning these prevents challenges to patriarchy and therefore social change.
What is globalisation?
Globalisation is the process of interaction and integration between people, companies and governments worldwide
What does Rikowski believe about Globalisation?
He believes that education is becoming a global commodity - useful or valuable thing that creates profit. Rikowski believes that the world wide organisation and world bank are supporting global education businesses as a way to increase productivity and economic growth
