P1 - Injury prevention and the rehabilitation of injury Flashcards
What are the types of injures? explain them
Acute - Happens all of a sudden,
Chronic - occur over a period of time, repeated and continues stress
Soft tissue - damage to skin, muscles, tendons
Hard tissue - damage to cartlidge and bones
Fractures (compound so open, simple so closed)
Dislocation - when the bone moves out of place and can do damage to the ligaments
What is a contieusin and a heamotoma?
contusion is a bruise where a blood vessel has ruptured or torn
Haemotoma is where the contusion leads to localised bleeding of the blood vessel
What’s a sprain?
What’s a strain?
A sprain is damage to the ligament so an over stretch or tear
A strain is a damage to the muscle fibres or tendons
What is an abrasion?
Superficial damage to the skin
what is osteoorthaistis?
an overuse chronic injury where the cartridge partly or completely wears away
what is a stress fracture?
A tiny fracture or crack in the bones caused from fatiguing muscles
what is shin splints?
chronic shin pain from the tibilas anterior becoming injured through excessive loading
What is tendonitis?
Where tendon becomes inflamed and damaged
What are the stages in injury re hab? (early, mid, late)?
EARLY
Gentle exercise
Encourage damaged tissue to heal
MID
Progressive loading
Develop strength
LATE
Functional exercises
Prepare for return to training/ competition
What techniques should you do when you get an injury, go through the stages
Early phase protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation no strecthing.
Mid phase, massage, hot cold, develop strength with key gentle stretches and exercises
Late, more stretching, massage, increased strength in exercise and movements
