what is a prescribed leader?

what are the pros and cons?

A

Selected from outside of the group or externally appointed.

pros -
Prescribed leaders have the advantage of being more objective or could have a ´fresh pair of eyes´ if externally appointed.
They may have more authority or power when given to them.
cons -
May not share or be aware of the team culture, ways of working or friendship group.
They may not be accepted by the group.

what is an emergent leader?

A

An emergent leader already belongs to the group.
Selection can be through voting by the group or the role can be assumed and readily accepted by the group.
Usually selected due to their skill level.
cons -
May lack objectivity due to already having own friendships in the group which may cloud their judgement.

Autocratic
Leader makes most decisions
Focus on task completion, the performance or winning.
Can cause hostility in group
Democratic
When a leader is concerned with interpersonal relations within the group.
Person oriented
Suits more mature/ advanced performers
Suits less competitive situations, safer tasks

Laissez faire - does fuck all

what is a Laissez-Faire leader?

A

Leader has no direct influence on the group.
When the leader takes a back seat and allows the group to lead.
The leader allows the group to make their own decisions.
Not suited to many sporting situations, but can encourage creativity.

what is Trait Perspective on Leadership?

A

Leaders have a genetic disposition or innate characteristics that show leadership qualities
“Great leaders are born not made”
Suggests leadership traits are stable and enduring and can be generalised across different situations
Assumes certain traits produce certain behaviour
negatives -
Sport leadership can be very sport/ situation specific
Suggests leadership skills cannot be developed

Leaders learn their behaviour from others
Vicarious learning
Strengthened if model is of high status, respected or a ‘significant other’
Social environment is very important
Negatives -
Not all people copy the behaviour of significant others.
A leader may emerge in an environment where there are no leaders.

what is the Interactionist Theory Perspective on Leadership?

A

States that an individual may have certain traits (e.g. - aggression) but these are not evident unless the situation demands it.
Accounts for the fact people are not leaders all day, every day or in every scenario.
Interaction of traits and environment

Some people always let others take the lead in every environment.

The leader needs to be aware of their own characteristics/qualities or leaders have their own natural leadership style/skills/past experiences/personality.
If they are naturally an autocratic/democratic leader
where they are very knowledgeable about an aspect of defensive tactics.
