Confidence Flashcards
What is self confidence?
The feeling we have about our capability to be good at sport in general or in specific scenarios/ sports
what is performance like with high self confidence?
High sports confidence makes you more likely to achieve positive outcomes in sport/be skillful/be successful/take risk /be competitive/achieve peak flow.
High sports confidence will make you more likely to take part/ compete/not feel inhibited/enjoy team activities/volunteer for roles/ show approach behaviours/try new activities.
High self confidence in a leader is likely to help performers they lead to participate or perform well.
If talented people with low confidence were encouraged they might experience success and enjoy participating more.
BUT, over confidence or complacency could cause underperformance
what is performance like with low self confidence?
Low sport confidence has a negative effect on the outcome or causes poor performance/underachievement.
Low sports confidence makes you less likely to participate in sport /compete in sport/try hard/attempt sports activities/volunteer for tasks/show avoidance behaviours.
Low sports confidence could cause disruptive behaviour hindering others.
Low sports confidence could cause people to not try sports / activities that they might actually be very good at / never realised their talent.
If people with low sports confidence were pushed into it (through school/parents) they would not be very motivated and therefore are likely to experience negative outcomes.
what is trait sports confidence?
Existing level of confidence
The stable and innate level of sports confidence
what is competitive orientation?
The level of competitiveness that the performer may have.
what is State sports confidence? what makes state sports confidence?
The level of Trait Sports Confidence & Competitive Orientation combine to indicate the amount of State sports confidence. (SC- state)
This is the confidence you have in an actual/specific situation or environment, and is changeable.
The SC-state dictates the behavioural response shown and skill produced
what is then the behavioral response leading on from state sports confidence?
if the performer has a high level of SC-State then the performance is likely to be confident, well motivated and likely to be positive.
If the performer has a low level of SC-State then the performance is likely to be tentative, poor, incorrect, lacking in confidence, weak or indecisive.
what is the Subjective Outcome?
After the performance the performer will either be satisfied or disappointed with how the performance went and the subjective outcome is based on how the performer judges or interprets the outcome.
what is self esteem?
Self esteem - The feeling of self worth that determines how valuable and competent we feel.
what is self efficacy?
The self confidence we feel in specific situations.
what are the pros and cons of self esteem?
pros - Reduced anxiety Fewer interpersonal problems Optimism Less conformist behaviour Improved body image Less likely to engage in risky behaviour cons - Depression Get bullied or become bullies Eating disorders Engagement in risky behaviours Reduced participation in sport
what are factors effecting self efficacy? explain what is Performance accomplishments? Vicarious experiences? Verbal persuasion? Emotional arousal?
Performance accomplishments - Have the strongest influence on self confidence
If success has been experienced in the past, then feelings of self efficacy and confidence are likely to be high
Vicarious experiences - This refers to what we have observed before performers doing well makes us have higher self efficacy
Verbal persuasion - encouragement particular activity, our efficacy in that situation may increase. If we are encouraged to try a particular activity, our efficacy in that situation may increase.
Emotional arousal Our perceptions of how aroused we are can affect our confidence in a particular situation.
You are more likely to feel confidence if you have strategies and methods to control physiological and psychological arousal
how do you improve someone’s self efficacy?
Encourage attribution of any previous failure or learned helplessness to controllable/ internal factors/ unstable factors (e.g. - effort)
Give encouragement/ praise/ reward/ positive reinforcement
Give them anxiety management strategies for emotional and physical arousal/ anxiety
Give early success to raise confidence (previous success)
Show them others achieving (vicarious experiences)
