Ovarian CA Flashcards
ovarian CA
- most lethal form of reproductive CA in women
when do mnfts appear
once ovaries grow large enough (d/t proliferation) to impact other organs
etiology/risks
- aging (65-84yrs)
- autosomal dominant
- family Hx of ovarian/breast CA
- nulliparity
- infertility
why is aging, nulliparity, and infertility a cause of ovarian CA
d/t having an unsuppressed cycle = repetitive cycles not broken inc risk of CA
types of ovarian CA
1) epithelial tissue (that lines ovary)
2) germinal tissue
3) stromal tissue
epithelial tissue type CA
- simple squamous or cuboidal epith
- adenocarcinoma
stromal tissue
connective tissue of cortical region, where ovarian follicles embedded (contain oocytes)
patho
- silent growth & spread
- spreads by extension
- spread by seeding
- true metastases
spread by extension
tubes, uterus, ligaments, other ovary (not mets b/c not transmitted via circulation)
spread by seeding
- bowel surfaces, liver & other organs
- pressure applied on adjacent organs or abdm distention
true metastases
liver, bone, brain via lymph & blood
mnfts
- non-specific GI disturbances (early)
- pelvic mass
- urinary & bowel obstructions
- adbo distention
- ascites & dyspnea
- pain
why does urinary & bowel obstructions mnft
d/t pressure on bowel
why does dyspnea mnft
Damage to cells & inflm –> 3rd spacing –> impacts diaphragm & lung expansion –> dyspnea
which mnft is the 1st finding and that means it already progressed
pelvic mass
