Cellulitis Flashcards
1
Q
cellulitis
A
- unspecific inflammatory condition
- infection –> inflm
- affects deeper layers of dermis & subcu layer
2
Q
infection by what microbe
A
bacteria:
- Beta hemolytic strep
- Staphylococcus aureus
3
Q
risk factors
A
- compromised skin (ulcers, wounds, incisions, etc.)
- compromised defences (ex. HIV/AIDS)
- elderly
4
Q
what area specifically targeted
A
- legs
- hands
- pinna of ear
5
Q
how does athlete’s foot cause cellulitis
A
bacteria enters the wound, advances up the legs, and causes cellulitis in the thighs
it invades dermis & goes into subcu later (into lymph vessels & spreads systematically)
6
Q
cmplx
A
- recurrence (esp in elderly)
- lymphangitis
- gangrene
- sepsis
7
Q
lymphangitis
A
inflm of lymph vessels as bacteria advances through them and spreads
8
Q
gangrene
A
extensive necrosis
- amputations may be necessary (DM pts high risk of this cmplx)
9
Q
sepsis
A
life-threatening systemic inflm
10
