Intussusception Flashcards
intussusception
one part of the intestine pushes into an adjacent section of the intestine
common area for intussusception to occur
ileocecal valve
why is ileocecal valve common area
build up of pressure forces the small bowel to invaginate the large bowel
patho
obstruction at site of invagination (ex. tumor) –> inflm –> inc production of exudate, hyperemia –> ischemia
- bowel obstr causes inc intraluminal pressure and pushes against the wall and constricts the vessels in the bowel wall –> ischemia –> infarction
cmplx
- infarction
- perforation –> peritonitis
how does peritonitis occur
necrosis of tissue can result in perforation of that area of the bowel and the bacteria within the intestine can infect the necrotic tissue –> bacterial peritonitis
tx
hydrostatic reduction
hydrostatic reduction
water-soluble contrast medium that uses air and water pressure to push back the invaginated area
