Glomerular Disease Flashcards
glomerulus
capillary network that sits in Bowman’s Capsule
2 processes of glomerulus
ultrafiltration & reabsorption
alteration in permeability of glomerulus causes what
more or less components filtered out of blood and into urine (fluids, electrolytes, proteins, glucose, etc.)
inc permb = more or less components filtered out
MORE filtered out (inc urine output)
5 categories of glomerular disease
1) acute nephritic syndromes
2) nephrotic syndromes
3) asymptomatic proteinuria & hematuria
4) acute glomerulonephritis
5) chronic glomerulonephritis
acute nephritic syndromes
- Dec glomerular permb (inc GFR) –> retain fluids (water & electrolytes) & nitrogenous wastes
- Very serious cmplx (azotemia, HTN, edema)
nephrotic syndromes
- Inc glomerular permb (inc GFR) –> lose components in urine that should not be excreted
- Proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia
- Hyperlipidemia
why does hyperlipidemia occur in nephrotic syndromes (2)
r/t liver responding to hypoalbuminemia by producing more proteins & LDLs –> lipiduria
asymptomatic proteinuria & hematuria
- Asympt in terms of obvious renal damage –> no impairment of kidney Fx (normal GFR)
- Less proteinuria than nephrotic syndromes (less severe)
