Glomerulonephritis (GN) Flashcards
1
Q
glomerulonephritis
A
glomerular inflm
- acute post-infectious (proliferative)
- various forms
2
Q
patho
A
- usually in children but not restricted
- Type III HS (viral or bacterial trigger) –> Ab-Ag complex deposited in glomerular capillaries
- proceeded by pharyngeal or dermal infection (7-12 days)
- Ab-Ag complex attaches to capillary walls –> blocking pores for filtration –> glomerular filtration impeded –> dec GFR –> acute nephritic syndrome
3
Q
characteristics of GN
A
- glomerular enlargement
- hypercellularity
4
Q
hypercellularity
A
- Inc in # of WBCs
- Inc in # of endothelial cells –> line capsule
- Inc in # of mesangial cells
5
Q
mesangial cells
A
- Specialized cells that cover 30% of glomerular capillaries
- Contract basement membrane of endothelium of glomerular capillaries –> dec SA of basement membrane –> dec GFR
6
Q
mnfts
A
- oliguria, proteinuria, hematuria (inflm damage)
- azotemia
- fluid retention
7
Q
azotemia
A
retain nitrogenous wastes
8
Q
fluid retention leads to which cmplx
A
HTN & edema
9
Q
recovery of GN
A
- usually self-limiting (several wks)
- must treat infection
