- type of SYNTHETIC VITAMIN D analogue
- works by BINDING TO VITAMIN D RECEPTORS; these are important in regulating skin growth & keratinocytes

seen often in DAYCARES or NURSING HOMEs
- can cause the BURROWING OF SKIN
- need to clean surfaces and properly rinse with hot water

what are our TOPICAL HAIR GROWTH DRUGS?
- MINOXIDIL (ROGAINE)
- FINASTERIDE (PROPECIA) **more systemic
minoxidil (ROGAINE)
can be used for both MEN and WOMEN
- works by increased vasodilation/blood flow and increasing opening of potassium channels
finasteride (PROPECIA)
- known as a PREGNANCY CATEGORY X DRUG
- cannot CRUSH THIS DRUG – can be potential risk for pregnant women if airborne
- can cause SYSTEMIC/LOCAL EFFECTS:
tachycardia
fluid retention
weight gain
skin irritation
fluorouracil (EFUDEX)
- type of TOPICAL ANTINEOPLASTIC
- works as an ANTIMETABOLITE
- helps to treat BASAL CELL CARCINOMA or ACTINIC KERATOSIS
- often use gloved fingers/applicator for application
- can cause serious side effects;
- soreness, scaling, swelling, pain, tenderness, dermatitis, photosensitivity

- want to assess for SYSTEMIC REACTIONS and adverse reactions;
- burning, indurations, irritation, pain or bleeding
- edema, erosions, exudations, vesicles
- COUGH, URI, MS reactions
isopropyl alcohol
used before MINOR PROCEDURES - like drawing blood or giving injections
povidone-iodine (BETADINE)
- kill BACTERIA, FUNGI, and VIRUSES
