A
  • destroys bacteria by changing bacteria’s DNA - interferes with the DNA GYRASE & TOPIOSOMERASE
  • they DO NOT inhibit the production of human DNA
  • often kill mostly GRAM-NEGATIVE and SOME GRAM-POSITIVE
  • also called FLUROQUINOLONES

indications of use

A
  • often used to treat COMPLICATED UTIS
    • due to excretion primarily by the kidneys
  • treatment for RESPIRATORY, SKIN, GI, BONE and JOINT INFECTIONS
  • ex. utis, travelers diarrhea, diabetic foot infections, gonorrhea

  • can cause CARDIAC ISSUES; prolonged QT interval
  • cardiac dysrhythmias
  • not recommended for children; can cause issues in CARTILAGE DEVELOPMENT

increased risk for;
- TENDINITIS/TENDON RUPTURE
- in older adult patients
- PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
- CNS EFFECTS - seizures
- MYASTHENIA GRAVIS
