- destroys bacteria by changing bacteria’s DNA - interferes with the DNA GYRASE & TOPIOSOMERASE
- they DO NOT inhibit the production of human DNA
- often kill mostly GRAM-NEGATIVE and SOME GRAM-POSITIVE
- also called FLUROQUINOLONES

- often used to treat COMPLICATED UTIS
- due to excretion primarily by the kidneys
- treatment for RESPIRATORY, SKIN, GI, BONE and JOINT INFECTIONS
- ex. utis, travelers diarrhea, diabetic foot infections, gonorrhea

- can cause CARDIAC ISSUES; prolonged QT interval
- cardiac dysrhythmias
- not recommended for children; can cause issues in CARTILAGE DEVELOPMENT
increased risk for;
- TENDINITIS/TENDON RUPTURE
- in older adult patients
- PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
- CNS EFFECTS - seizures
- MYASTHENIA GRAVIS
