Osteogenesis- Lecture 9/17/21 Flashcards
Endochndral bones
Come about using calcified cartilage templates,
- long bones
- thoracic bones
- vertabrae
- Pelvis
Membrane (dermal bones)
- De novo bone synthesis
- Flat bones in the skull
Periosteal bone collar
First step of endochondral bone synthesis, de novo bone synthesis
Steps of bone synthesis
- Chondrocyte hypertrophy and cartilage calcification
- Death of chondrocytes which opens tissue for angiogenesis
- Osteoprogenitor cells follow vessels, become osteoblasts
Periosteum
Surrounding tissue of the bone, responsible for growth in girth
Primary center of ossification
In the diaphysis, where bone starts growing
Secondary center of ossification
In the epiphysis, creates epiphysial plates
Epiphysial plate
Growth plates, areas of hyaline cartilage that allow bones to grow in length
Zones of growth plate
Resting-> proliferation->hypertrophy-> calcification
Mixed spicule
Calcified cartilage core with overlaying bone
Bone remodeling
Occurs throughout life and during fracture healing, turns woven bone to lamellar bone
Compact bone remodeling
Osteoclasts dig haversian channels, osteoblasts lay concentric circle bone
Osteoid
Bone material that is not yet calcified
Spongy bone remodeling
Same as compact bone, but no haversian channels, osteoclasts remove woven bone and replace with lamellar
Intramembranous ossification
Starts with a condensation of mesenchyme, differentiate to osteoblasts and do de novo synthesis
