Epithelial layer of cells surrounding the ovary, site of 70% of ovarian tumors
Tunica Albuginea
The CT capsule just deep to the mesothelium
Types of ovarian follicles
Primordial
Primary
Secondary
Primordial follicle features
-Single layer of flattened cells, primary oocyte
Primary (early) follicles
-Single layer, cuboidal follicle cells, primary oocyte
Primary (late, multilaminar) follicles
Growth of oocyte with several layers of follicular cells
Secondary (antral) follicles
- Appearance of follicular fluid with theca interna and externa
Theca interna
Make estrogen (contain aromatase)
Theca externa
Myofibroblast, contract in response to LH surge
Mature (Graafian) follicle
Secondary Oocyte, clear corona radiata
Corpus luteum
Yellow body after ovulation, breakdown of basement membrane and ingrowth of blood vessels, differentiation into theca lutein cells and granules a lutein cells
Corpus luteum secretion
Unkept by hCG, secretes progesterone to upkeep preganancy
Corpus albicans
Collagenous scar if no/after pregnancy, Appears cloud like
Follicular atresia
Death and resorption of the follicle, most have this fate
Glassy membrane
Thickening of basement membrane following follicular atresia
