Esophagus, Stomach, And Intestines- Lecture 10/12/21 Flashcards
Mucosa
Made up of the epithelium, lamina propria, and muscularis mucosae
Layers of GI wall
Mucosa, sbmucosa, muscularis externa, adventitia
Esophagus epithelia
SSNKE
Muscular makeup of esophagus
Upper 1/3= skeletal
Middle 1/3= Skeletal and smooth
Lower 1/3= Smooth muscle
Esophageal submucosal glands
Often mixed serous and mucus, secretes mucus, bicarbonate, lysozyme, pepsinogen, EGF
Gastric epithelium
Simple columnar
Barrett esophagus:
Metaplastic to gastric or intestinal mucosa (chronic GERD)
Gastric glands proper
Parietal, zymogenic, and chief cells in mucosa
Parietal cells
Secrete HCl, cells with a lot of mitochondria, secrete intrinsic factor (B12 absorption)
Intracellular canaliculus
Increases surface area of parietal cells, increasing HCl prduction
Chief cells
Secrete pepsiogen and lipase
Components of the small intestine
Duodenum, jejunum, Ileum
Small intestine epithelium
Simple columnar with microvilli
Relative distribution of goblet cells
More prevalent later int he tract (more goblet cells in the ileum than duodenum
Plicae circulares
Submucosal core, increases surface area
