Oral ecology Flashcards
What is the human microbiome?
The full array of microorganisms (the microbiota) that live on and in humans
What is a microbe?
Tiny living organism, such as bacterium, fungus, protozoan or virus
What is a microbiome?
- Collectively all the microbes in the human body; a community of microbes
What is a biofilm?
A commnity of microbes that live together on a surface
Microbes are ubiquitous. What does this mean?
They are found everywhere
Some microbes are native, what does this mean?
They are normally found in the body
Some microbes are introduced. What does this mean?
They suddely arrive at a new residence in the body
We can pick up microbes over our life. Give a few examples of when we can pick up microbes?
- When delivered as a baby (mode of delivery)
- Breast feeding
- Geographical location
- Family members
What are the benefits of normal flora? (5 points)
- Synthesize and excrete vitamins
- Prevent colonization by pathogens
- May antagonize other bacteria
- Stimulate the development of certain tissues
- Stimulate the production of cross-reactive antibodies
What is the germ theory of disease: Koch’s Postulates? (4 points)
- The microbe must be present in every case of the disease
- The microbe must be isolated from the diseased host and grown in pure culture
- The disease must be reproduces when a pure culture is introduced into a susceptible host
- The microbe must be recovered from an experimentally infected host
