Oral Cavity and Esophagus Flashcards
What are the two areas of the oral cavity?
oral vestibule and the oral cavity proper
What is the oral vestibule?
The pouch btw lips and teeth
What is the anterior border of the oral vestibule?
The upper (or lower depending on which vestibule) lip
What is the posterior border of the oral vestibule?
The teeth
What structures are located within the oral vestibule (3)
superior and inferior labial frenulum and the gingivae
What is the inferior and superior labial frenulum
tissue that attaches lips to gums
What is the gingivae?
Gum
What forms the anterior border of the oral cavity proper?
teeth
what froms the inferior border of the oral cavity proper?
the tongue (forms the floor)
What forms the superior border of the oral cavity proper?
the hard and soft palate
What forms the inferior border of the oral cavity proper?
palatoglossal arch and palatopharyngeal arch `
What are the two associated structures within the oral cavity proper?
lingual foramen, uvula, and palatine tonsils
What is the uvula?
It is an extension off the soft palate that closes when swallowing, blocking off access to the nasopharynx
What is the palatine tonsil?
Lymphoid tissue in btw the platoglossal arch and the platopharyngeal arch (back and sidee of mouth), has immune functions
What is the lingual frenulum?
mucous membrane that functions to attach the tongue to the floor of the mouth
what ar the 3 major salivary glands?
parotid gland, submandibular gland, and sublingual gland
What function does a mucous gland have?
secrete a mucous that provides lubrication
What function does a serous gland have?
secretes enzymes containing saliva
What function does a seromucous gland have?
Secretes both lubricating mucous and enzyme containing salvia
Where is the parotid gland located?
anterior to the ears
What is superficial to the parotid gland?
Skin
What is deep to the parotid gland?
Masseter
What drains the parotid gland?
Stendon’s duct
Where does stendon’s duct open?
behind the second upper molar
What nerve innervates parotid gland
CN 9 - hypoglossal nerve
What type of gland is the parotid gland?
Serous (secretes saliva with enzymes)
Where is the submandibular gland located?
Inferior to mandible and in btw diagastric muscles
What emptiues the submandibular gland?
Warton’s duct
Where does Warton’s duct open?
Lateral to the lingual frenulum (fold of mucus membrane that attaches tongue to the roof of the mouth)
What innervates the submandibular gland?
Cranial nerve 7
What type of gland is the submandibular gland?
Seromucous gland - secretes lubrating mucous AND enzyme containing saliva
Where is the sublingual gland?
located inferior to tongue on the floor of the oral cavity
What drains the sublingual gland?
Batholin’s duct
What does bartholins duct connect with?
Warton’s duct
What nerve innervates the sublingual gland?
cranial nerve 7
what type of gland is the sublingual gland?
mucous secreting gland that acts to lubricate
What divides the tongue into posterior 1/3 and anterior 2/3
sulcus terminalis
What is the function of the epiglottis?
When relaxed - upright to allow air into larynx and lungs
When folded (during swallowing) - covers entrance of larynx so food does not enter windpipes
What is the lingual tonsil?
lymphoid tissue located at the back of the tongue serving an immunological function
where is the epiglottis located?
in the throat, behind tongue and in front of larynx
Which of the papillae contain tastebuds?
foliate papillae and the fungiform papillae and the circumvallate papillaefoliate
What is the function of the foliate papillae
to perceive taste
Where are the foliate papillae located?
bilaterally along posterolateral margins of the tongue surface
What is the function of the fungiform papillae?
taste perception
Where are the fungiform papillae located?
dorsum of the tongue - more in the middle
What are the filiform papillae?
rough patches that allow you to grip food and form bolluses - they have NO tastebuds
Where are the filiform papillae located?
anterior dorsum of the tongue (think the tip)
What innervates the taste function of the epiglottis
CNX
What innervates the taste function of the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
CN 9
What innervates the taste function of the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
CN 7 - chorda tympani branch
What innervates the general sensation function of the epiglottis
CN X
What innervates the general sensation function of the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
CN 9
What innervates the general sensation function of the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
CN 5, branch 3
