Definition
A
An eyelid and skin infection in front of the orbital septum where the inflammation and infection remains confined to the soft tissue layers superficial to the orbital septum

Risk factors
A
- Boys
- Previous sinus infection
- Lack of Hib vaccination
- Recent eyelid injury

Signs and symptoms
A
Swelling, Redness, Hot skin around eyelids and the eye

What to differentiate it from
A
- orbital cellulitis → affect sight
- presents with more ocular pain, decreseed vision, proptosis
- emergency
- CT SCAN TO DISTINGUISH

Investigations
A
- Clinical
- CT sinus and orbits with contrast -> differentiate from orbital cellulitis
- WBC -> increased neutrophils

Management
A
Empirical antibiotics e.g. Cefotaxime/Clindamycin

Q
Complications
A
Develop into orbital cellulitis so vulnerable patients or severe cases may require admission for monitoring
