What is a compulsion
Repetitive behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly (behaviors, actions, things they do)
What is the diagnostic criteria for OCD
A. Presence of obsessions, compulsions, or both
B. Recurrent obsessions &/or compulsions that are time consuming (more than 1 hr/day) or cause marked distress or significant impairment C. The OCD symptoms are not attributed to the physiological effects of a substance
D. Not explained by the symptoms of other mental disorder
What to specify with OCD
W/ good or fair insight
W/ poor insight
W/ absent insight/ delusional beliefs
Tic related
What is a co-morbid condition with OCD
Major depression (50% of those w/ OCD have suicidal thoughts, 25% attempt)
What does a person with obsessions attempt to do
ignore or suppress thoughts, urges, o images or to neutralize them w/ some other thought or action
What do behaviors do in OCD
aimed at preventing or reducing anxiety or distress or preventing some dreaded event or situation
What is the diagnostic criteria for hoarding disorder
A. persistent difficulty in discarding or parting w/ possessions, regardless of their actual value
B. This difficulty is due to a perceived need to save the items and to distress associated w/ discarding the items
C. The difficulty discarding possessions results in the accumulation if possessions that congest and clutter active living areas and substantially compromises their intended use. If living areas are uncluttered it is because of 3rd party people.
D. The hoarding causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning
E. It’s not attributed to a medical condition
F. It’s not explained by other mental conditions
When to specify in hoarding
Excessive acquisition
Good or fair insight
Poor insight
Absent insight/delusional beliefs

What is an obsession
persistent ideas, thoughts, impulses, or images that are intrusive and unwanted. (Thinking part, can’t see obsessions)
