individuals may misuse prescription drugs to achieve a high or other desired response

pressure from fam/friends to be drug free
denial of having a mental disorder
What are the principles of co-occurring disorders
- when mental illness and substance disorders coexist, both should be considered primary. Simultaneous primary treatment is the treatment of choice
- A substance disorder or psychiatric disorder should be considered “secondary” only if it resolves when the comorbid disorder is at baseline
- Both major mental illness and substance disorders are examples of primary, chronic, biological mental illnesses which fit into disease and recovery model of treatment
- There’s no 1 type of dual diagnosis treatment program. For each client the appropriate intervention at any point in time depends on the specific diagnosis, phase of recovery, level of acuity, severity and motivation for treatment of each disease
