Major Depressive disorder criteria
A. Must have 5 or more of the symptoms present for the same 2 weeks and be a change in level of functioning. At least 1 of the symptoms is 1)depressed mood or 2) loss of interest or pleasure
1. Mood is described as depressed, sad, hopeless, discouraged, or down in the dumps
2. loss of interest or pleasure at least to some degree (anhedonia)
3. significant weight loss or gain
4. insomnia or hypersomnia
5. psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day
6. fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
7. feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day
8. impaired ability to think concentrate or make decisions. easily distracted, memory difficulties
9. recurrent thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan or suicide attempt or specific plan for committing suicide
B. Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or some interference in social occupational or other important areas of functioning
C. Not attributed to another psychological effects of substance or another medical condition
Bipolar I disorder diagnostic criteria
A. A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood lasting at least one week (or any length of time if hospitalization is required)
-described as euphoric, unusually good, cheerful high
-infectious quality to those that don’t know the person
-expansive quality for interpersonal sexual or occupational interactions -can become irritable
- lability of mood
B. must have at least 3 of the following symptoms
- inflamed self-esteem or grandiosity
- decreased need for sleep
- more talkative than usual or pressured to keep talking. Loud fast talk nonstop
- flight of ideas. Thoughts race faster than they can talk
- distractibility: inability to screen out external stimuli
- increase in goal directed activity. excess of planning and participation in multiple activities. increased sex drive, fantasies, and behavior are often present
- excessive involvement in pleasurable activities. Poor judgment
C. Mood disturbances severe enough to cause marked impairment in functioning or require hospitalization to protect individuals from negative consequences from poor judgment
D. not do the substance use a medication or to another medical condition (can look like meth use)
What is the diagnostic criteria for panic disorder
Recurrent expected panic attack, during which time 4 or more of the following symptoms occur:
- palpitations
- sweating
- trembling or shaking
- sensations of SOB or smothering
- feeling of choking
- chest pain or discomfort
- nausea and abdominal distress
- dizziness or lightheadedness
- Fear of losing control or going crazy
- Fear of dying
- Paresthesias
- Chills or hot flush/heat sensations
What is the diagnostic criteria for agrophobia
A. Marked fear for anxiety about 2 (or more) of the following 5 situations
- using public transportation
- being in open spaces
- being in enclosed spaces
- standing in line or being in a crowd
- being outside of the home alone
B. Anxiety about being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or which help may not be available in the event of a panic attack of panic-like symptoms.
C. The agrophobic situations almost always provoke fear or anxiety
are avoided, require presence of companion
D. The situations are avoided, require presence of companion
E. Fear is out of proportion to actual danger
F. Lasts 6 months of more
G. Causes clinical significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of function
What is the diagnostic criteria for specific phobia
A. Marked or persistent fear that is excessive or unreasonable cued by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or situation
B. exposure to the phobic stimuli results in an immediate anxiety response
C. person recognizes the fear is excessive or unreasonable
D. phobic situation is avoided or else endured with distress
E. the avoidance, anxious anticipation or distress in the feared situations interfere significantly with the persons normal routine, social, occupational functioning, relationship or there is a marked distress about having the disorder
F. subtypes
a. animals
b. natural environment
c. blood, injection, injury
d. situational
e. other
What is the diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder
A. excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not for a period of at least 6 months
B. individuals find it difficult to control worry
C. anxiety and worry are present with at least 3 additional symptoms
a. restlessness
b. being easily fatigued
c. difficulty concentrating
d. irritability
e. muscle tension
f. Disturbed sleep
D. anxiety, worry or physical symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social occupational or other areas of functioning
E. not attributed to psychological effects of a substance
F. not better explained by another mental disorder
What is the Diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia
A. Characteristic symptoms: 2 or more of the following each present for significant portion of time during a 1 month period
- delusions (fixed beliefs that can’t be changed in spite of being told otherwise
- hallucinations (perceptions experienced w/o outside stimuli. most common with auditory; hearing things)
- disorganized speech (frequent derailment of incoherence)
- grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior (child like/silly. Don’t see catatonic in established countries)
- negative symptoms (flat affect, alogia, avolition)
B. Social/occupational dysfunction: for a significant portion of the time since the onset of the disturbance, 1 or more major areas of functioning (work, relationships, self-care) markedly below the level achieved prior to the onset.
C. Duration: continuous signs of he disturbance persist for at least 6 months. Must include at least 1 month of symptoms that meet criteria A
D. Schizoaffective and mood disorder exclusion: schizoaffective disorder and mood disorder w/ psychotic features have been ruled out.
E. Substance/ general med condition exclusion
Bipolar II diagnostic criteria
Must meet criteria for current or past hypomanic episode and the criteria for current or past major depressive episode. criteria are the same
What is the diagnostic criteria for social anxiety disorder (social phobia)
A. A marked and persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others
B. person fears that they will act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing
C. exposure to the feared stimulus situations provokes anxiety (can be situation specific or pre-situational)
D. Social or performance situations are avoided or else endured with extreme anxiety
E. Fear, anxiety, or avoidance is out of proportion to danger
F. Fear ,anxiety, or avoidance is persistent (6 months or more)
G. The avoidance or anticipatory anxiety or distress interferes significantly with the person’s normal routine, occupational functioning, social activities, or relationships, or else there’s a marked distress about having the disorder
