bodily harm, physical pain/injury
What is financial abuse
misusing a persons money or assets which causes disadvantage to that person
What is emotional abuse
act to cause emotional pain
What is neglect
caregiver fails to take care of them. also can be self-neglect-person neglects themselves
What is abandonment
deserting the person
What is violation of rights
denial of certain inalleable rights granted by US law
What are behavioral characteristics if being abused
Anxiety, nervousness, apparent fear reticence, failure to make eye contacts, withdrawal allow caregiver to answer questions about health related complaints refusal of tx intervention depression anger, hostility, belligerence inappropriate apparent euphoria lethargy
What are physical findings of abuse
untreated injury unexplained injury pain or w/drawal from touch minor skin bruising, lacerations, and or burns malnutrition/dehydration unexplained weight loss Pallor, sunken eyes and or cheeks poor personal hygiene soiled clothing, inappropriate clothing for season
Characteristics of those who abuse
intoxication/drug use aggression and or history of violence indifference to caregiver edu verbal abuse of the elder answering questions for the elder verbal or physical cues of a sexual nature that may indicate sexual abuse
What is our professional duty
educate self about indicies of possible elder abuse
take appropriate action to prevent further abuse (educate others)
Report suspected abuse to social service entities or law enforcement authorities
