- Genital herpes (HSV type 2) - Valacyclovir
- Recurrent genital herpes - oral Acyclovir
- Shingles - high dose Acyclovir
- Chickenpox within 24 hours after rash in children, adolescents & adults - high dose Acyclovir
- HSV encephalitis - IV Acyclovir
- Severe VZV infections (localised & disseminated) - IV Acyclovir
- Severe CMV disease (retinitis, colitis) in immunocompromised - Ganciclovir, Valganciclovir

- GI upset

- Neurotoxicity (hallucinations, involuntary movements) -IV Acyclovir
