how does skill emerge
“…skill consists in the ability to bring about some predetermined results with maximum certainty, and the minimum outlay of energy, or time, or of time and energy.” (Guthrie, 1935, p. 162)
three parameters for an emergence of a skill
Maximum Variability → relatively low performance variability.
Minimum Effort → efficiency and economy.
Minimum Time → related to performance speed, e.g., pitching a baseball, typing on a keyboard.
what are two types of schemas
Motor response schema – relationship between motor response and outcome
Recognition schema – relationship between sensory experience and outcome
Development (i.e., learning) of schemas to scale GMP performance was contingent on:
i) Initial conditions
ii) Specific movement parameters
iii) Sensory consequences
iv) Outcome of movement
