Lecture 25 Flashcards
attention capacity
attentional capacity is not limitless, we can only pay attention to a certain number of things at once.
selectivity of attention
attention is selected either intentioanlly or incidentally
attention focus types
attention is wide or narrow and internal or external
theory of attentional capacity
single-channel filter theories. tasks are accomplished in serial order, the system can process only one task at a time. e.g you are reading, watching tv and talking to a friend, we can only attend to talking to the friend.
selective attention
due to limited attentional capacity we filter out less relevant information to prioritise the most relevant
modality capacity
movement and speech attention capacity
perception capacity
verbal, visual balance attention capacity
if tasks require a common mechanism will they be easier to perform simultaneously ?
no they will be more difficult to perform at the same time.
attentional capacity increasing
when we become more skilled at something the indivdual can attend to other aspects of the environment as the task does not take uo as much capacity.
attentional styles emerge
internal broad, internal narrow, external broad, external narrow.
is it better to have a external or internal focus
external. better retention of the skill
do you want external or internal view for simple tasks?
less benefit for external view, Best for learners to link to outcome. whereas more skilled performers benefit from focusing on outcome / effects.
inattentioanl blindness
due to selective attention, it is easy to miss information in perceptual tasks with high cognitive demands.
what is an emotion ?a
a mental state that arises spontaneously rather than through conscious effort and is often accompanied by physiological changes.
