Nervous System Overview Flashcards
What are the 2 divisions of the nervous system
CNS
PNS
What are the 4 views of the brain
- Dorsal
- Ventral
- Lateral
- Medial
What is gray matter in PNS
ganglion cells
What is white matter in PNS
Nerves (bundles of axons)
What is gray matter in CNS
Collections of neuron cell bodies
What is white matter in CNS
Tracts
-Bundles of axons that share a common origin and destination
What is the definition of ispsilateral
On the same side
What is the definition of contralateral
On the opposite side
Where is the anterior part of your brain
The front part
Where is the posterior part of the brain
Back part
What is the midline
The central brain axis
What is the medial part of the brain
Towards the middle or midline
What are the 3 planes of the brain
- Sagittal
- Horizontal
- Coronal
What are the major parts of the CNS
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum
- Brain Stem
- Spinal cord
What are the 3 major division of the brain
- Forebrain
- Midbrain
- Hindbrain
What is a gyrus
Brain “Peaks”
What is a Sulcus
Brain “valleys”
How many segments does the spinal cord have
31
-each segment has a dorsal and a ventral root
What are the 5 regions of the spinal cord
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- Lumbar
- Sacral
- Coccygeal
When a spinal cord segment receives sensory input and supplies motor input to a similar region, what is this skin region called
Dermatone
What is the PNS made up of
The somatic System (voluntary system)
The Visceral System (autonomic system; liquids)
What are the 2 types of neurons that the spinal cord carries
Afferent-carrying info to a place, bringing in sensory info
Efferent-carrying info from a place, taking motor info
Why aren’t there dermatones on the face?
There are 12 separate segments for the face and the nerves come directly off the brain
How many meninges are there?
- Dura Mater
- Arachnoid
- Pia Mater
What is CSF produced by?
choroid plexus (found within the ventricular system in the brain)
What are spaces within the brain the contain CSF called?
Ventricles
How much CSF do your ventricles hold
150ml
-can produce 500ml per day
What is the function of verticals and associated canals
More you CSF within the brain and transport out to subarachnoid space
What are the 4 lobes of the brain
- Frontal
- Occipital
- Parietal
- Temporal
