Nervous System Division & Parts of the Brain Flashcards
What is included in the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord
What neuron carries signals and what neuron receives signals in the PNS?
Afferent (sensory), efferent (motor)
Where are ganglia neurons found?
along the sides of the spinal cord, digestive system, and outside of the body
Brain divisions
Prosencephalon, Mesencephalon, Rhombencephalon
What makes up the Prosencephalon?
The diencephalon and telencephalon, both make up limbic system
What does the mesencephalon control?
balance, movement
Somatic nervous system role
voluntary movements
Autonomic nervous system role
involuntary responses and has two subdivisions- sympathetic and parasympathetic
Epinephrin
released by medulla (adrenaline)
Where is touch processed?
Parietal lobe at the somatosensory cortex located on the postcentral gyrus- primary sensory cortex
Where is visual processing?
lateral geniculate nucleus and superior colliculus and goes to occipital lobe
Where is auditory processed?
starts at inferior colliculus and medial geniculate, geniculate nucleus
Role of glial cells
nutrients, structure, insulation, defense
Role of glial cells
nutrients, structure, insulation, defense
Role of astrocytes
subdivision of glial cells and control transport of nutrients, is a blood brain barrier, active transport of glucose
