nerves of the lower limb Flashcards
what is the nerve supplying the anterior and medial thigh, its roots, branches and their innervation areas?
femoral nerve - L2-L4
branches as saphenous which supplies medial leg and foot
what does the obturator (L2-4) supply?
medial thigh
what supplies the posterior thigh?
posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh - S1-S3
what roots is the tibial nerve and what are its branches?
L4-S3
medial and lateral plantar
where does the medial supply?
medial sole, first 3 toes and half of fourth toe
what supplies the lateral sole, half fourth and fifth toe?
lateral plantar
what nerve is L4-S2?
common fibular - branches into superficial fibular and deep fibular
what supplies the dorsum of the foot?
superficial fibular
where does the deep fibular supply?
webspace between first and second toes
what is the sural nerve?
the nerve that goes from S1 to the tibial and common fibular and posterior and lateral leg and lateral foot are supplied
what is acute compartment syndrome?
increased pressure inside a muscular compartment after trauma. The fascia does not expand to accommodate swelling therefore there is pain, vascular occlusion, nerve compression and muscle necrosis - fasciotomy
how would you assess the function of the sciatic nerve?
posterior thigh/ hamstrings - flexion of the knee
deep muscles of the posterior leg - flexion of the toes
superficial muscles of posterior leg - plantarflexion of the ankle
anterior compartment of leg - dorsiflexion of toes and ankle
lateral compartment of leg - eversion
