Neoplasia II Flashcards
How do you give a histological description of a neoplasm?
- Location
- Capsulated or Unencapsulated
- well demarcated or poorly demarcated
- Expansile, infiltrative, or compressing adjacent tissue
- Shape (nodular, multilobular, verrucous, etc.)
What is the characteristic pattern of carcinomas
nests, packets, lobules
What is the characteristic pattern of adenocarcinomas?
tubules, acini
What is the characteristic pattern of sarcomas?
bundles, streams
What is the characteristic pattern of round cell tumours?
Sheets, Cords
What is the characteristic pattern of endocrine tumours?
Packets
What three things do you note about the cytological features of a neoplasm?
- Shape
- Cell Borders
- Cytoplasm (Amount, Colour, Character)
What are some morphological features of malignancy?
- Loss of tissue organisation
- Invasion
- No capsule or invasion of capsule
- Vascular invasion
- Metastasis
- Necrosis
- Haemorrhage
What is neoplastic transformation?
Uncontrolled proliferation
What occurs with DNA damage in neoplastic cells?
- They have either lost or there is mutation with the p53 gene
- The cell cycle arrests and repair is not induced
- The genetically damaged cells proliferate and accumulate mutations (otherwise known as a tumour)
What is angiogenesis?
Continued growth of solid tumours which depends
* on an adequate blood supply
* nutrients and oxygen
* they are disorganised, unstable and leaky
