Neoplasia I Flashcards
What is a hamartoma?
localised proliferation of normal but disorganised tissue found in its normal location- includes normal components, but one tissue type may predominate
What is a choristoma
Normal tissue found in an abnormal location such as a dermoid cyst
What are three examples of benign tumours?
- Adenoma
- papilloma
- polyp
What is an adenoma?
tumour that arises from the epithelium
What is a papilloma?
exophytic (growth from an epithelial surface) arising from a cutaneous/ mucocutaneous surface
What is a polyp?
an epithelial tumour arising from a mucousal surface
What is an example of a malignant carcinoma?
nests, cords, islands
What are some examples of mesenchymal benign tumours from spindle cells?
fibroma, haemangioma, osteoma
What are some examples of mesenchymal malignant tumours from spindle cells?
Fibrosarcoma, haemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma)
What are some examples of mesenchymal round cell tumours?
Malignancies sometimes called sarcomas (lymphoma, histiocytic sarcoma, mast
cell tumours)
Leukaemia if in circulation
What is a teratoma?
rare type of tumour that forms from immature stem cells (pluripotent or totipotent)
The tissues derive from all three stem cell layers
What are the two tumour types?
not benign/ malignant
- Undifferentiated/ anaplastic (malignancies where you cant see the cell of origin
- Neuroendocrine tumours (from endocrine cells with complex terminology and classification
What is an epithelial adenoma?
arises from the glandular epithelial tissue with a tubular pattern
What is a benign papilloma?
Exophytic growth arising from a cutaneous/ mucocutaneous surface
What is a polyp?
An epithelial tumour projecting from the mucousal surface
