Natal Flashcards
semi-fowler position
common birthing position in america; woman lying on back with head of bed raised 30-45 degrees for gravity assist
gestation
the process of period of developing inside a womb between conception and birth; measured from the 1st day of the last menstrual cycle to the current date
Allis clamp / forcep
commonly used surgical instrument. Has sharp teeth to hold or grasp heavy tissue; can also grasp fascia and soft tissues such as breast or bowel.
adenomyosis
tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrial) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. Displaced tissue acts normally; thickening, breaking down, bleeding, during ea cycle. Can lead to difficulty conceiving or miscarriage.
Breech position
abnormal presentation where the baby’s buttocks is first instead of head.
Cesarian section likely; incision thru abdom wall and uterus for fetal removal.
transverse presentation
abnormal birthing position; baby is at right angles in the birth canal. Vaginal delivery is not possible.
occiput posterior position
abnormal birthing position where infant’s head is down near the cervix, but the babys face is towards the mothers front
fetal fibronectin
swab test taken of fluid near cervix, can predict premature labor
Kleihauer-Betke test (KB)
blood test to determine how much fetal blood is channeled into mother’s blood; diagnose how much RhoGAM will be needed for Rh-negative mothers
type and Rh screen
blood test done to type blood and determine Rh positivity or negativity during pregnancy; hemolytic disease may occur if baby is positive and mother is negative
culdocentesis
needle procedure where fluid is withdrawn from cul-de-sac; evaluate for ruptured ectopic pregnancy
fetal monitoring
-external fetal monitor: device used to record heartbeat thru abdomen
-fetal scalp electrode: electrode attached to fetal scalp thru cervix
-tocometry: instrument used to measure strength of uterine contraxns
ultrasonography: bedside diagnostic using sound waves to look @ fetus
rectocele
type of prolapse where the supportive wall of the tissue b/t a woman’s rectum and vaginal wall weakens; the front wall of the rectum sags and bulges into the vagina, potentially protruding out
RhoGAM (row-gam)
medicine to stop blood from making antibodies that attack Rh-positive blood cells. Made from human blood that contains Rh-positive proteins that prevent immune system from making permanent antibodies.
parous
having produced offspring
