Muscles Flashcards
What is skeletal muscle?
Striated, coordinated contraction, attached to bone through tendons
What is cardiac muscle?
Striated, coordinated contraction, involuntary control of the blood pump
What is smooth muscle?
Non-striated, involuntary, spindle shaped but cell borders rarely seen, responsible for peristalsis
What does deep fascia do?
Divides the muscles into compartments
When a muscle moves, what are the three functional muscle groups that allow this?
Prime mover, syngergists and antagonists
What does the prime mover do?
The main participant in a movement
What are antagonists?
The muscles that oppose the movement
What are synergists?
Prevent undesirable movement at intermediate joints
How are muscle fibres arranged?
In bundles or in fasciculi
What connective tissue separates the muscle fibres?
Endomysium
What is the sheath of connective tissue surrounding a bundle of muscle fibres
Perimysium
What connective tissue provides a dense sheath on the surface of muscle fibres?
Epimysium
What happens when myostatin inhibits the differentiation of myoblasts?
Myoblasts do not mature into myocytes so muscle growth does not stop
What two ways can muscles attach themselves to the periosteum of the bone?
Directly through fleshy muscle fibres or via tendons
