MSK - Muscles of the Lateral Compartment of the Leg Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two muscles of the lateral compartment of the leg?
A
- Fibularis longus
- Fibularis brevis
2
Q
What is the overall action of the lateral muscles?
A
- Eversion of the foot
- Fix the medial margin during running
- Prevents excessive eversion
3
Q
What is the origin of the fibularis longus?
A
- Superior and lateral surface of the tibia
- Lateral tibial condyle
4
Q
Where does fibularis longus insert?
A
- Medial bones of the foot (mainly medial cuneiform and base of metatarsal 1)
- After fibres converge into a tendon which descends into the tendon posteriorly to the lateral malleolus
- Crosses under the foot
5
Q
What are the actions of the fibularis longus?
A
- Eversion of the foot
- Plantarflexion of the foot
- Supports the lateral and transverse arches of the foot
6
Q
What is the origin of fibularis brevis?
A
Inferior and lateral surface of the fibular shaft
7
Q
Where does fibularis brevis insert?
A
- A tubercule on metatarsal 5
- Belly forms a tendon and descends with fibularis longus tendon
- Goes into the foot posteriorly to the lateral malleolus
- Passes over calcaneus and cuboidal bones
8
Q
What are the actions of fibularis brevis?
A
Eversion of the foot
9
Q
What is the innervation of fibularis longus and brevis?
A
Superficial fibular (peroneal) nerve (L4 - S1)
10
Q
What is the arterial supply of fibularis longus and brevis?
A
Fibular/peroneal artery
11
Q
How can the common fibular nerve be identified?
A
- Using fibularis longus
- Gap between parts of the FL originating from the fibular head and neck
- Nerve passes through the gap and bifurcates to form deep and superficial fibular nerves
