Sagittal Plane
Divides body into left and right portions
Frontal/Coronal Plane
Divides body into front and back portions
Transverse/ Horizontal Plane
Divides body into upper and lower portions
Proximal Position
Position is nearer the root of the limb that another structure in the limb e.g. knee is proximal to hip than foot
Distal position
Position is further away from the root of the limb than another structure in the limb e.g. foot is distal to hip than knee
Medial direction
Towards the midline
Lateral direction
Away from the midline
Superior direction
Up/ towards head
Inferior direction
Down/ towards feet
Ventral direction
Towards front
Dorsal direction
Towards back (FLIPS AT LOWER EXTREMITIES BEWARE)
Anterior Position
In front
Posterior position
At the back
Prone position
Lying face down
Suprine position
Lying face up
Unilateral position
Situated on one side of the body
Bilateral Position
Situated on both sides of the body
Flexion (in terms of the shoulder)
Brings arm up and forward
Extension (in terms of the shoulder)
Brings arm back
Abduction (in terms of the shoulder)
Brings arm up at the side and away from the midline (lateral direction)
Adduction (in terms of the shoulder)
Brings arm towards midline (medial direction)
