MSK - Anatomico-Medical Terminology Flashcards
Sagittal Plane
Divides body into left and right portions
Frontal/Coronal Plane
Divides body into front and back portions
Transverse/ Horizontal Plane
Divides body into upper and lower portions
Proximal Position
Position is nearer the root of the limb that another structure in the limb e.g. knee is proximal to hip than foot
Distal position
Position is further away from the root of the limb than another structure in the limb e.g. foot is distal to hip than knee
Medial direction
Towards the midline
Lateral direction
Away from the midline
Superior direction
Up/ towards head
Inferior direction
Down/ towards feet
Ventral direction
Towards front
Dorsal direction
Towards back (FLIPS AT LOWER EXTREMITIES BEWARE)
Anterior Position
In front
Posterior position
At the back
Prone position
Lying face down
Suprine position
Lying face up
Unilateral position
Situated on one side of the body
Bilateral Position
Situated on both sides of the body
Flexion (in terms of the shoulder)
Brings arm up and forward
Extension (in terms of the shoulder)
Brings arm back
Abduction (in terms of the shoulder)
Brings arm up at the side and away from the midline (lateral direction)
Adduction (in terms of the shoulder)
Brings arm towards midline (medial direction)
Medial Rotation (in terms of the shoulder)
Rotates arm towards midline
Lateral Rotation (in terms of the shoulder)
Rotates arm away from the midline
Circumduction
Abduction + Adduction + Flexion + Extension = arm moves in a circular motion
Flexion of elbow
Bends forearm superiorly
Extension of elbow
Bends arm inferiorly
Pronation of forearm
Turns hand so palm is face down
Supination of forearm
Turns hand so palm is face up
Abduction of hand
Radial deviation therefore moving hand left
Adduction of hand
Ulnar deviation therefore moving hand right
Extension of hand
Pulls hand backwards
Flexion of hand
Flops hand forward
Abduction of fingers
Spreads fingers out
Adduction of fingers
Brings fingers together
Flexion of fingers
Fingers move downwards
Extension of fingers
Fingers move upwards
Palmar abduction
Thumb moves towards the ceiling (sagittal plane)
Palmer adduction
Thumb moves back towards the palm
Radial Abduction
Thumb moves towards radius (coronal plane)
Radial Flexion
Thumb bends across palm
Opposition of thumb
Rotatory movement where thumb tip touches tips of other fingertips
Reposition of thumb
Thumb rotates back out
Flexion of hip
Bends leg forwards
Extension of hip
Bends leg backwards
Abduction of hip
Leg moves away from midline in sagittal plane
Adduction of hip
Leg moves towards midline in sagittal plane
Internal rotation of hip
Rotates towards midline
External rotation of hip
Rotates away from midline
Flexion of knee
Bends knee upwards
Extension of knee
Bends knee back down
Dorsiflexion of foot
Bending of dorsum of foot (top) upwards
Plantarflexion of foot
Bending of ventral foot downwards
Inversion of foot
Twisting of foot so sole points towards the midline
Eversion of foot
Twisting of foot so sole points away from the midline
