MREST Using Information Flashcards
Typically, what are the three ways to use a source in your work?
Quote it directly, paraphrase it, or summarize it
How do you quote and when should you quote?
Use the author’s exact words
Do this when you can’t say it any better and do this when the meaning of the words will be lost in paraphrase
What are some things to remember when quoting?
A typical university-level paper should have no more than 10-20% quoted material, and watch out for out of context quotations
What should you quote?
Important things or authors (Constitution, Shakespeare, etc.)
How do you paraphrase?
Use the author’s concept but state it in your own words,
What are some things you can do to help you paraphrase?
Practice “talking back” to the thing you want to quote, and make the thing make sense to you via careful note taking
How do you summarize?
Distilling a larger piece into a main idea
What are some good reasons to summarize?
It helps you pull together only the pieces of the research work that you need and is selective
What is something to remember about summarization?
Be careful not to use it to misuse and/or misrepresent the whole work
When should you summarize?
When you are using a large source
Why shouldn’t you procrastinate?
It can result in taking shortcuts which can result in plagiarism
What must you always do when using an author’s work ?
