Statistics
The science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting data
Data
Contextual facts and numerical info from which conclusions are drawn
Data Set
A generic phrase used to refer to the raw collection of facts and numbers that we have about a specific topic of interest for a specific group of individuals
Individual (Subject; Case)
One of the “objects” or “entities” to be studied
Population
The complete set of individuals of interest
Sample
The subset of individuals from the population for which information is actually gathered
Sample Size
The number of individuals in the sample
Variable
A characteristic that is measured or recorded for one individual; can be qualitative/categorical (gender, race, locality, educational attainment, etc.) or quantitative (age, number of children, and weight, etc.)
Distribution
A variable is some presentation of information that shows the values that a variable can take and the frequency (or relative frequency) of those values
