BIO 103 SimUText Section 1 Flashcards
Climate Change
A persistent and significant change in the measures of climate, the average weather condition in a given region
Enzymes
Catalysts, chemical compounds (in this case biological molecules) that speed up chemical reactions, by lowering the activation energy needed for the reaction
Global Warming
An overall warming of Earth as indicated by an increase in its average surface temperature
Performance
How effectively an individual or population executes a given biologic task
Population
In ecology, a group of individuals of the same species living within a defined area at the same time
Intrinsic (Population) Growth Rate (r)
The population growth rate, per individual, for a population with unlimited resources r=b-d r=Intrinsic Growth Rate b=Average Birth Rate d=Death Rate
Ectotherms
An organism whose body temperature is primarily determined by heat from its environment
Temperature Performance Curve
A curve that describes how the expression of a particular trait (growth rate, movement rate, catalytic rate of an enzyme, etc) varies with temperature
What is Tmin, Tmax, and Topt?
Tmin is the lowest temperature something changes, Tmax is the highest temperature something changes, and Topt is the temperature something changes the most
