What does “ethics” mean?
The moral principles that govern a person’s or group’s behavior
Why are citations important?
Its ethical to give credit to whoever’s work you borrowed
What is plagiarism?
The unethical usage of someone else’s work that is considered cheating
What must be considered concerning usage of someone else’s work?
The duration of ownership and who can legally use the work
What is intellectual property?
Creations of the mind including paintings, songs, etc.
Why do copyright laws exist and what is the exception?
To ensure creators decide if their work can be used by someone else and get paid, however fair-use material can be used by anyone, regardless of creator’s wishes
Should you cite “common knowledge”?
If you didn’t know the info before taking the course, or the info wasn’t yours, than yes
Why put things in your own words?
You demonstrate understanding
What should you not do?
Change a few words
Use synonyms for the author’s original words
Change the sentence structure while keeping the author’s original words
What is citation?
Providing bibliographical credit as well as parenthetical or in-text
What three things do citations do?
Lend credibility to your work
Indicate which ideas are others
Offer opportunity to investigate ideas
Why are there different citations, what are they, and what are they used with?

What qualifies for copyright protection?
Physical work
What is fair use?
Usage of copyrighted material for limited and “transformative” purposes, as well as teaching and parodying
What does “transformative” mean?
It means adding new value to someone’s work
