A person is aware that there is a problem with their behavior, a person has no intent to change
What is the action step for someone in the pre-contemplation stage (p46)
Provide information and feedback to raise the person’s awareness of the problem and the possibility of change. Do not give prescriptive advice
Contemplation
Individuals are aware that there is a problem and are actively thinking about making a change in the foreseeable future (usually within the next six months)
Action step for contemplation stage
Help the person see the benefits of changing and the consequences of not changing
Preparation
individuals have made the decision to change their behavior and are preparing to take action soon (w/i the next month) usually gathering info, setting goals, seeking support
Action step during preparation
Help the person find a change strategy that is realistic, acceptable, accessible, appropriate, and effective
Action stage
individuals have taken specific steps to change their behavior to achieve desired outcome
Action step during Action stage
support and be an advocate for the person, help accomplish the steps for change
Maintenance stage
individuals have successfully changed their behavior and are focused on preventing relapse
Action step during maintenance stage
help the person identify the possibility of relapse and identify and use strategies to prevent relapse
