Aversion therapy for AUD: (2)
Disulfiram is a medication primarily used to treat chronic alcoholism
FDA APPROVED FOR AUD
works by inhibiting the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase which is involved in the metabolism of alcohol
What happens when someone on Disulfiram consumes alcohol (5)
leads to a buildup of acetaldehyde in the blood, resulting in unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, flushing, and increased HR
aversion effects is used to discourage alcohol consumption
What client education needs to happen when prescribing Disulfiram?
refrain from using anything that contains alcohol (vinegar, aftershave lotion, perfumes, mouthwash, cough medication) while taking disulfiram and up to 2 weeks after discontinuing disulfiram
Disulfiram can elevate?
liver function tests monitoring is necessary
