All who lived within the Empire held British passports + were entitled to live and work in Britain
Why did the Windrush Generation leave the Caribbean?
- poverty and hardship common
- tourist industry not yet developed
- sugar (main export) price at an all time low
- Many were taught to look up to Britain as a ‘mother country’ - assumed they would be supported and welcomed
- Britain was short of workers and encouraged emmigration
What was the impact of the Windrush generation?
- newspapers carried the story of the ‘colour problem’
- not all white Britons welcomed immigrants
- Many immigrants were low paid and worked jobs like cleaners and hospital porters
- experienced difficulties whilst finding places to live and looking for jobs
