Metals: Ferrous Metals Flashcards
Ferrous Metals:
iron
contain substantial amount of iron
Ferrous Metals: examples
ex. iron, steel, stainless steel, other steel alloy
very low carbon content (<.30%),
and substantial amount of slag.
wrought iron
qualities of wrought iron:
soft, ductile, resistant to corrosion.
typical use of wrought iron:
limited to ornamental work
carbon content >2% (high)
cast iron
qualities of cast iron:
very hard, but brittle.
this type of cast iron:
high silicon content,
plumbing valves/pipes/hardware.
grey cast iron
this type of cast iron:
low silicon content,
little use in construction,
until processed to produce malleable iron.
white cast iron
this property allows withstand excessive deformations,
due to high tension, w/o failure.
ductility
properties of steel:
high strength,
ductility,
uniformity of manufacture.
problems of steel:
deform @ fire,
corrosion w moisture.
% carbon affects strength/ductility.
> carbon =
+strength,
-ductility.
medium-carbon steel (construction):
if phosphorus + sulfur too high,
affect weldability, make brittle.
low-carbon steel % carbon:
0.06–0.30%
