Fire rated glazing and glazing installation Flashcards
fire-rated glazing:
higher impact resistance than wire glass.
low expansion coefficient.
not all meet safety glazing req’s.
clear ceramic
fire-rated glazing:
max 30 min.
cannot pass hose-stream test,
does meet impact safety standards.
special, tempered fire protective glass
3-hr rating for ≤100 sqft.
clear ceramic
1-hr rating for ≤1296 sqft.
clear ceramic
when fire, gel foams, turning opaque. 30/60/90 min. depending thickness / number glass panels used. restriction on max size of lites, and frame type.
2 or 3 layer tempered glass w clear polymer gel between
traditional method of glass install
rabbeted frame
held temporarily w glaziers points (small triangles of metal),
and face putty glass in place.
rabbeted frame
semi-rigid, formed material,
placed between frame and the glass.
glazing tape
req’d most installations.
removable pieces of framing,
allow install and easy replace.
glazing stops
rigid strips of neoprene designed to hold glass.
used in concrete reglet, metal frame.
after glass inserted,
compression strip forced into slot, tightens grip on the glass.
structural glazing gaskets
semirigid neoprene or other elastomeric mat’l.
prevent direct contact of glass/frame.
allow expansion of both.
setting blocks
face dimension and the bite.
wind causes deflection, pulling partially out of frame.
must have sufficient bite to accomodate.
critical dimensions:
glass supported top and bottom,
edges butt jointed and sealed w silicon sealant.
frameless glazing system:
v + h framing are entirely interior,
glass is attached w silicon sealant.
structural glazing:
3 major regulated situations for glazing
wind loading,
fire-rating,
hazardous locations (human impact).
