Lumber Cutting Flashcards
plain sawing, aka
flat sawing
plain sawing:
most efficient,
least $,
cut various orientations,
(cathedral pattern)
quartersawing:
1st cut into 1/4’s,
then sawing perpendicular to diameter line.
= perpendicular to grain,
so pattern more uniformly vertical,
tend to twist and cup less,
quartersawing
shrink less in width, hold paint better, and have fewer defects.
quartsawing
1st cut into 1/4’s,
then sawing radially to center of tree.
rift sawing
must be shifted after each cut,
and lost of waste.
rift sawing
when wood siding applied over fiberboard/insulated sheathing:
high density polyethylene infiltration barrier first
high density polyethylene allows:
moisture vapor, but minimizes air leakage.
naturally resistant to moisture (req less protection)
redwood,
cyprus
siding species:
redwood,
cedar,
Douglas fir,
pine
