What’s the point of ethics?
Guidance for human behaviour
Ethical decisions require 3 big things:
- Agent (who)
- Action (what/how)
- Ends (Why)

5 principles of medical ethics:
- autonomy
- beneficence
- nonmaleficence
- justice
- Human dignity
pseudoethics does not involve 3 things:
reflection
deliberation
rational justification
what does respect for human dignity mean?
each human being is of equal moral worth.
How you would want to be treated
what is relational autonomy
recognizing relevant relationships and influences to provide genuine opportunities for choice
Informed consent intended to do 3 things:
- prevent coercion/deception
- empower patients
- reflect on risks/benefits
Autonomy needs 4 things:
- information
- competency
- voluntariness
- understanding
repecting autonomy does NOT mean?
deferring decisions/responsibility to the patient
2 big points in Trust and Autonomy?
- privacy

Beneficence is only to the patient?
May extend to family, friends/society
Beneficence is more than just physiological improvement, it is?
