Lymphoid Cytology Flashcards
what are some indications for lymph node fine needle aspirate or biopsy?
enlargement or abnormal shape/firmness
screening for metastatic disease
searching for infectious disease?
what are the major causes of lymphadenopathy/lymphadenomegaly?
reactive hyperplasia
inflammation/lymphadenitis
lymphoma
metastatic neoplasia
combinations of the above
what should the majority of cells be in a lymph node fine needle aspirate?
lymphoid cells
how large a medium/intermediate lymphocytes compared to neutrophils?
about the same size
how large are large lymphocytes compared to neutrophils and red blood cells (dogs)?
larger than neutrophils
more the 3 times red blood cell size
what are lymphoglandular bodies?
membrane-bound fragments of cytoplasm
resemble platelets
what are mott cells?
variants of plasma cells that have large cytoplasmic globules called russell bodies
what are flame cells?
plasma cells with eosinophilic inclusions/fringing
which lymph nodes almost always appear reactive compared to other nodes?
mandibular lymph nodes
what should be the predominant cell type in a reactive lymph node fine needle aspirate?
small lymphocytes
what is lymphadenitis?
inflammation of the lymph node
what can cause granulomatous/pyogranulomatous lymphadenitis?
fungal infections
mycobacterium
protozoal infections
chronic inflammation
when is eosinophilic lymphadenitis/infiltrate most commonly seen?
when node is draining an area with eosinophilic inflammation
what are lymphoma fine needle aspirate findings generally characterized by?
homogenous population of lymphocytes
