Lymphatic System (FINAL) Flashcards
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
Function of the Lymphatic System
- Immune function = immunity
- Drain and filter fluid via nodes
What type of fluid does the lymphatic system filter and drain?
Filters and drains lymph fluid
- Lymph fluid = extracellular fluid
- Fluid outside the cells
What are the two types of extracellular fluid?
Types of Extracellular Fluid?
- Plasma
- In the blood = plasma
- Out of the blood = lymph
- Interstitual = tissue fluid
- In the tissue = interstitual fluid
- Out of the tissue = lymph
What is the general definiton of lymph nodes?
Lymph nodes = where you filter lymph fluid
What is the purpose of lymph nodes?
Purpose of Lymph Nodes
- To remove pathogens with WBCs
What are pathogens?
Pathogens = disease causing organisms
What types of WBCS are in the lymph nodes?
“Never Let Monkeys Eat Bananas”
- *Neutrophils (40-70%)
- Lymphocytes (20-49%)
- Monocytes (4-8%)
- *Eosinophils (1-4%)
- *Basophils (<1%)
* granulocytes
What is an afferent pathway?
Afferent pathway = in/towards
What is an efferent pathway?
Efferent Pathway = out/away
