Endocrine (FINAL) Flashcards
What is the endocrime system?
A chemical system that uses hormones to control a target organ or organs
What is a hormone?
Hormone: chemical released by a cell or gland that acts on another part of the body
What is a target organ?
Target organ = organ being acted on by hormone
What is the “master” gland?
The pituitary gland is the “master” gland but in reality the hypothalamus controls the secretions of all the pituitary gland hormones
What is the location of the pituitary gland?
The pituitary gland located in the sella turcica of the sphenoid bone and attached to the hypothalamus via the neural stalk
What are the hormones secreted by the anterior pituitary gland?
- FSH
- LH
- ACTH
- TSH
- GH
- PRL
What are hormones secreted by the posterior pituitary gland?
- ADH
- Oxytocin
What is the function of the hypophyseal portal system?
The hypophyseal portal system enables endocrine communication between the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary gland.
What is the pathway of the hypothalamic hormones in the hypophyseal portal system?
Hypothalamic hormones (releasing or inhibiting) are secreted into the hypophyseal portal system starting with:
- the primary capillaries in the hypothalamus,
- leading to portal venules
- traveling down the infundibulum
- to a group of secondary capillaries in the anterior pituitary.
