Lymphatic System Flashcards
1
Q
Lymph Vessels
A
- Branching tubes that extend throughout the body
- Thin walls that resemble veins
- Valves transport lymph to subclavian veins
2
Q
Lymph nodes
A
- Small spherical-shapes organs of the lymphatic system that contain many white blood cells
- Swellings in tubes
- Mainly in neck, groin, armpits
- Outer walls carries lymph in and out
- White blood cells filter harmful particles out
3
Q
Thoracic duct
A
Largest lymph vessel
Left shoulder
4
Q
Lacteals
A
Extension of lymphatic system
Found inside villi
5
Q
Function of lymphatic system
A
- Collects interstitial fluid which surrounds the cells of the body
- Defend body against disease-causing organisms
- Absorbs and transports digested fats from the digestive system
6
Q
Lymph
A
A clear liquid that has been collected from around the cells and transported in lymph vessels back to the circulatory system
• Interstitial fluid/Tissue fluid/Extra cellular fluid
• Formed by plasma leaking from capillaries
7
Q
Spleen
A
Produces lymphocytes and antibodies that filter harmful particles out
8
Q
Thymus
A
Specialised organs in immune and lymphatic system that produce mature lymphocytes
9
Q
How Lymph is Formed
A
• Blood in arteries is under high pressure and tissue fluid is forced out of plasma • It surrounds every cell in the body • Re-enters blood in capillaries Passes into lymph vessels as lymph • Rejoins the bloodstream near the neck
